Happy New Year!
“New” is the core message of the gospel. A new Kingdom has broken into this world, grounded in a new covenant, marked by new-creation-lives, who experience a new Spirit as they live out a new commandment.
I didn’t finish 2014 particularly well.
Somewhere along the line, after last summer, I got bogged down in busyness and buried by the tyrannically urgent. I finished the Fall with projects done, classes finished, and most of my major work-goals met…but, in hindsight, I didn’t finish well.
I thought that new ideas, new circumstances, or new projects would rejuvenate me. They did, but only momentarily and only superficially. I thought that new people, new “things,” and new achievements would restore the spirit. They served, instead, to distract me from spiritual sensitivity. What I thought would invigorate me, actually diminished me.
I’ve been pondering and praying this past week or two about this new year. I’d like a stronger 2015 than 2014. I’d like some change. I’d like something new. Perhaps you feel the same way.
I’m tempted by the readily tangible—new areas to serve, new friendships to cultivate, and new places to travel and see.
But the new I most need lies within; renewal of the soul and spirit, renewal of hope and joy, renewal of faith and love. I’m realizing that the new that will make this a truly rich new year, is the transforming new that only the Spirit of Christ can produce.
I’d like to think, pray, and write this year about the church. I’d like to blog about the wonder of grace. I’d like to have conversations about new trends within education. But the starting point is not the renewal of everything beyond me, but the renewal of everything within me (Galatians 6:15). That’s surely true for us all.
This week, this month, and this year, may Christ renew us if we have faltering faith, aching hearts, lonely souls, or hardening hope. I look forward to renewing the Journey with you.
Because of grace.
Dave, in hindsight I don’t think I finished 2014 very well either. I’m praying for spiritual revival in 2015. MK

David, I loved your article. I just preached on 2 Cor. 5:17 about living as a new creation(…the old is gone, the new has come). I’ve discovered that we often waste time focusing on behaviors in which we may be deficient when the heart of the matter is focusing on our new identity in Christ. I’m tired of pulling the zombie of the “old man” out of the grave to lurch about when he can just be consigned back to the grave from which he and his fleshly ways came. I’d much rather walk in the Spirit as a new creation. By the way, I recently published a new book about “Our Spiritual Walk” and would be happy to send you a free copy If I can get your address to send it to. Happy new year! Ed Skidmore

I have missed your posts! They’re always so spot on! This message definitely rings true with me as well. I’ve also chosen to renew my focus towards only the things HE has called me to and not those distractions that inevitably pop up or which I have a knack for creating. This requires me to renew my focus on Him each day just as the morning is new. Wishing you well in 2015!

Thanks for your note Rowlie. I have a very limited speaking schedule because of my “day job” here at the University. I’d love to do a spiritual getaway that tours some of the cathedrals of Europe 18 months from now. Be fun to have you and Suzette join me and Kim! Blessings as you continue to serve Christ in Nebraska. Stay warm this week! 🙂

As i read this I’m thinking i could use a healthy dose of personal revival as well. I’m TIRED, and finding myself easily frustrated as of late. And i too find myself reaching for professional and ministry goals leaving personal goals at the bottom of the priority list. Prayers for a more soul-enriching 2015 for us all!

I’m so glad you are back. I have missed you and your insights and integrity. I didn’t finish 2014 very well myself, but have such hope for the “new” in 2015. I’m in a place where I feel that nothing is really bad, but nothing is really good either. I would like to move out of that place. I like your thoughts about renewal.
Thank you for your honesty.

David, thank you for sharing your heart… always an encouragement and “so close to home.”
As I enter the New Year, I am working on developing the daily, moment by moment awareness, of the Lord’s presence and promptings. While I may not have a 10 year plan developing through this process (which fights against my long term drive for success in my flesh), I am finding that moment by moment I am attempting to love the person in front of me with the grace of Jesus flowing through me and trying to be aware of Holy Spirit nudges of scriptures, pictures, words of encouragement, consolation and edification that bring the Kingdom of God in each exchange. Maybe this is what the Apostle was trying to get us to tap into when he admonishes us to “redeem the time?”
I’m looking forward to catching up with you. Send me an email sometime, and I will be glad to fill you in… the Kingdom of God IS on the move! Blessings on you, my dear mentor and brother!

Tom, so nice (as always) to hear from you. I agree with you that “redeeming the time” is less about planning well as living with God-awareness in the moment. Too much time remains unredeemed. I’ll shoot you an email soon. Blessings as you continue to respond to those Holy Spirit nudges this year!
